The Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup

The way my posts will work are as follows...

I will not be writing match reports that you can get on any website or newspaper, I will however will be writing about my views and opinions on the game, atmosphere and anything related to the match day.

Yesterday was "Family Fun Day" at St Mary's in honour of the Markus Liebherr Memorial cup (I say cup, it was actually a ornamental polar bear!). There was all the fun of the fair as well as a live band and lots of grumpy stewards!

Werder Bremen and Athletico Bilbao were the visitors to St Mary's for the inaugural Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup and I think he would have been proud. A lot of Saint fans had clubbed together to buy a massive flag in honour of our deceased owner and it was unfurled at the beginning of the day. There were about 8,000 people there yesterday which was a little bit disappointing but the few that were had a really enjoyable time and watched 3 great games.

There were people there...honest!

Saints first game was against last years Champions League qualifiers Werder Bremen, a game that we should have lost miserably.....but we didn't and we looked fantastic as we knocked in the 3 goals!
It pains me to say this but Chamberlain looked different class as did Lallana and I know that we will struggle to keep hold of them both.

Saints final game was a 2 0 loss to a far superior Athletico Bilbao, they had pretty much their first team out and it showed. The only stand out player was Aaron Martin who made a fantastic tackle in the box to stop Martinez from opening the scoring.

Each game had a different team (see below)

Saints: Bialkowski, Butterfield, Fonte, Seaborne, Harding, Chamberlain, Hammond, Cork, Lallana, Guly, Connolly.
Werder Bremen: Mielitz, Wolf, Schmitz, Schoppenhauer, Wesley, Marin, Hunt, Trybull, Wagner, Schindler, Thy.

Saints: Davis, Richardson, Martin, Jaidi, Dickson, Holmes, Schneiderlin, Chaplow, Forte, Doble, Barnard.
Athletic Bilbao: Fernandez, Iraola, Ustaritz, San Jose, Ocio, Iturrapse, Susaeta, DeMarcos (De Galarreta 43), Martinez, Saborit, Gomez.

No Lambert you say?

Don't worry, my source says he has a back spasm and will start against West Brom on Wednesday night.

Apologies for the small post but it was only a friendly!

Things I learnt today...

1. Werder Bremen are rubbish.
2. Don't sit in front of a Gran  who knows nothing about football and her annoying Grandchild.
3. Don't eat a Chilli Hot Dog!
